Fr Laurence Freeman visits Marist College Canberra

Fr Laurence Freeman OSB recently presented at An Evening of Dialogue, a Catholic Schools Symposium and Senior Student Forum at Marist College Canberra.

The purpose of the evening was to create a space for respectful dialogue on the National Marist theme 'Full of Grace, transformed by God's love' and its implications for Catholic Education in the Canberra community, and was open to all members of the Marist Association, the Marist College Canberra community and invited guests and representatives from the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn.

Fr Laurence is a mMnk of the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. He is the director and spiritual guide of the World Community for Christian Meditation. With Irish and English roots, Fr Laurence was educated by the Benedictines and studied English Literature at New College, Oxford University. Before entering monastic life, he worked with the United Nations in New York, in Banking and Journalism. He is Director of The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) a global, inclusive contemplative community, and is the author of a number of books on Christian Meditation. He travels extensively, giving presentations and leading Christian Meditation Retreats.

During his visit, Fr Laurence reflected on how contemplative practice opens people to a deeper experience of God’s love, not as an abstract idea but as a lived, interior reality. He explained that silence and stillness help dissolve the ego’s illusions, allowing individuals to become more compassionate, present, and authentically human. Ultimately, he suggests that this inner transformation is the foundation for a more peaceful, grace-filled way of relating to others and engaging with the world.
