This end of financial year, we invite all members and friends of the Marist Association to donate to Australian Marist Solidarity’s Mid-Year Appeal, to enable them to support girls and young women to lead change in their communities.
Alisan is deaf. Growing up on the remote island of Santa Catalina, her daily life depended on fishing and gardening. As one of seven children, life was not easy. But for Alisan, it was even harder. Alisan, her younger brother, and one other girl are the only deaf people in their community. Without access to education or sign language, they faced many barriers.
“I never imagined I would go to school,” she shares.
Everything changed when her grandmother told the family about San Isidro Care Centre - a vocational training facility in Solomon Islands, where young people who are deaf learn practical skills for independence and future employment. Alisan’s parents found a way to afford the boat ticket to send her there.
Now, Alisan is learning sign language, reading and writing and practical skills like sewing. She is making friends and wants to work in a restaurant in Honiara to support her family and live independently. Alisan’s younger brother hopes to follow in her footsteps and attend San Isidro.
When young women like Alisan are given the chance to lead, change follows.
Alisan’s story is not unique.
Joana left school in Grade 3. Growing up, she had never met another deaf person. Joana felt deeply isolated and very nervous in social situations.
At San Isidro, Joana’s life is being transformed. Joana is learning to communicate, build relationships and grow in confidence. She dreams of finding a job and helping other deaf children access the same opportunities.
She is becoming a leader in her own way.
Joana says “If I meet another deaf person, I will encourage them to come to San Isidro- to learn and find friendship.”
Your gift today can help more young women lead the way.
$110 Builds practical skills for independence (hospitality, computing, woodworking)
$250 Supports literacy and numeracy training for young women who missed out on schooling
$500 Sustains long-term vocational training and income-generating skills
Alisan and Joana are both leading. And across more communities, girls and young women need the chance to lead.
Today, you can help more young women like Alisan access education and independence. Please give a generous, tax-deductible gift before 30 June.
Together, we bring hope.
Yours in Solidarity,
Br Neville Solomon
