Building Bridges: Interfaith Dialogue in Baw Baw Shire

In January 2025, the Baw Baw Islamic Network Australia Inc. (BINAI) established the first mosque in Baw Baw Shire – an historic milestone for the local Muslim community. Located in the former St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the mosque now serves as a place of worship for the 192 Muslims living in the area, filling a significant gap with no other mosques within a 45km radius.

It was a warm, engaging afternoon that deepened mutual understanding and respect.

Following a successful Community Open Day on 15 February, members of the Warragul Marists formed new friendships with BINAI members, sparking plans for an interfaith dialogue event. After a few friendly emails and a coffee catch-up, a date was set. The President of BINAI warmly invited the Warragul Marists to the mosque for an afternoon of conversation, learning, and connection. The gathering offered a meaningful opportunity to explore the mosque, ask questions, and engage in open dialogue. We shared delicious food, exchanged stories of faith, and discovered both common ground and enriching differences. It was a warm, engaging afternoon that deepened mutual understanding and respect.

This initiative reflects the spirit of Pope Francis, who has encouraged interfaith dialogue as a path to peace and mutual respect. We now look forward to continuing this journey of friendship by welcoming members of the mosque to our gathering in October for the next chapter in our interfaith dialogue.
