From 13-15 September, twenty-four educators and formators from Marist schools and ministries across Australia gathered at The Hermitage, Mittagong, for Creative Fidelity to Marcellin’s Charism, a formation program led by Br Michael Green. Set in the spiritual heartland of the Marist mission in Australia, the gathering provided participants with a rich opportunity to deepen their understanding of St Marcellin Champagnat, the early Brothers, and the enduring charism that continues to animate Marist life and mission today.

Across seven formation sessions, participants explored the meaning and relationship of key Marist concepts such as charism, spirituality and creative fidelity, while situating the Marist story within the social, ecclesial and educational realities of post-Revolutionary France. They examined the life and spirituality of Marcellin Champagnat through personal testimonies, correspondence and historical sources, gaining fresh insights into his character, leadership and vision. The program introduced participants to the theological foundations of Water from the Rock, the influence of the French School of Spirituality, Marcellin's educational project, and the contribution of the first generation of Brothers whose faith, courage and commitment shaped the foundations of the Marist movement. Participants also explored emerging paradigms for the future of the Marist project, reflecting on contemporary priorities of formation, association, leadership and scholarship.
One quotation from Marcellin's correspondence captured the spirit of the gathering: “How much good you can do, dear friend!” Addressed to one of the earliest Brothers engaged in the ministry of education, these words continue to challenge and inspire Marists today. Throughout the program, participants were reminded that Marcellin's charism was never simply about preserving traditions but about responding courageously and creatively to the needs of young people, especially those most in need of hope, belonging and opportunity.
As the program concluded, participants reflected on how they might live the charism with renewed energy in their own schools, ministries and communities. Returning to their places, they carried with them a deeper appreciation of the Marist story, a stronger sense of co-responsibility for the mission, and a renewed commitment to making Jesus Christ known and loved in the Marian way. In this sense, Creative Fidelity to Marcellin's Charism was not simply a study of the past, but an invitation to continue writing the next chapter of the Marist story with courage, imagination and faith.
