Marist Fourvière Celebration 2026

Inspired by Mary: The Origins of the Marist Mission

The annual Marist Fourvière Celebration is a special occasion for all who share in the Marist spirit and mission. In 2026, we gather to commemorate the historic Marist Fourviere Pledge made on 23 July 1816, a defining moment in the story of the Marist family. On the day after their ordination, twelve young priests and aspirants, including St Marcellin Champagnat and Fr Jean-Claude Colin, climbed the hill of Fourvière in Lyon, France. There, in a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady, they pledged themselves to the foundation of a new religious movement inspired by Mary. Their vision was to create a community whose members would serve the Church with zeal and humility, modelling their lives on Mary’s faithful discipleship from Nazareth to Pentecost.

This promise at Fourvière is recognised as the foundational moment of the Society of Mary in all its expressions - brothers, sisters, priests and lay Marists. More than two centuries later, the Marist mission continues to flourish throughout the world, inviting people to live the Gospel with simplicity, humility and a spirit of service.
