A recent local gathering of the Mascot Marists brought together members of our community to reflect on our shared journey as Pilgrims of Hope, united in the Marist mission.
Richard Quinn, Local Coordinator of the Mascot group, organised the event and chose the theme to honour the 200th anniversary of the building of the Hermitage, drawing a meaningful connection between this foundational moment and our mission today. After enjoying generous hospitality - wine, cheese, and nibbles- the gathering unfolded in four parts:
The Hermitage Story
Mark O’Farrell opened with reflections on the story of the Hermitage’s construction in France, giving thanks to God for the 200 years of Marist life and mission that have grown from this sacred place. The vision of St Marcellin Champagnat in rural France in 1825 continues to inspire Marists around the world to illuminate the path of mission, then and now, as Pilgrims of Hope for our world.
Pilgrimage Insights
Br Tony Leon built on this message by inviting recent pilgrims, Stewart Foster, Emma Davis-Cooray, and Maria Quinto, to share personal reflections from the 2025 international Marist pilgrimage to Rome, Greece, Turkey, and France. They spoke of moments of grace, transformation, and deep connection with the Marist story and spirituality, both during the journey and since returning.
Shared Reflection Time
Following these heartfelt testimonies, Br Tony offered a powerful insight: “Perhaps hope is not something we search for, but someone we let in.” This reflection invited participants to consider how hope is experienced and shared in our daily lives and mission.
Community Prayer and Gratitude
Richard concluded the gathering with a time of communal prayer, expressing gratitude for the life of St Marcellin Champagnat, the builder and dreamer whose vision continues to inspire Marists to be builders of hope in their communities and beyond.
Together, the group prayed for all Marist communities around the world, that they may remain faithful to the spirit of the Hermitage, simple, strong, and grounded in Gospel values, living with joy, humility, and unwavering trust in Mary.
Marcellin the Builder, pray for us.
Many thanks,
Mark O'Farrell
